Monsoon combines the graceful lines of a modern "Philip Rhodes-style" motor sailer with the rugged and sure proven seaworthiness of the most able offshore cruiser. Monsoon is a roomy, seaworthy and sea kindly vessel, designed and equipped for living aboard and extensive cruising in comfort and safety. Apart from the 5 cabins,there are the 3 separate living areas (aft deck seating - pilothouse - salon) which can accommodate lots of personal individual space, which is nice in a live aboard situation with a bigger group or family. Space and headroom are essential on a live aboard yacht. Yes, she is a big boat but you sail her like a 50 footer, The sails are not enormous and the furlers work fine. The autopilot steers the vessel almost always. And one man drops the anchors in the bay.

You are on the Monsoon with a group of 8, under sail for a full day passage from A to B. Two crew are in the shady pilothouse, on so called watch, reading a book or playing dominoes, relaxed in the U-sofa. Autopilot, radar with alarm, gps and chart plotter are ON duty and speed over the ground is 8 knots, ETA 5 hrs 25 min. Two others are in the salon, mam is cooking and one so called help is watching the video which they made yesterday of climbing sand dunes on an island. Two more sailors are aft, one is sunbathing on the aft deck, the other one is trying to catch a fish trawling lines. Nr.7 is sitting on the bow pulpitt, checking out for dolphins. Number 8 is the far away individualistic, young solo-sailor, below in his cabin and in full speed listening to his loud MP3 player.
OK, Here we are talking about a lot of PERSONAL SPACE on an affordable and easy to handle sailing yacht.

Dimensions of the vessel: 72' x 18,1' x 8'
HULL info click. She has a sharp bow and a canoe stern. She is round bilged, has a wineglass shape hull with full keel with cutaway forefoot, medium/heavy displacement approx 59 tons, 1/4 inch mild steel hull, alloy superstructure and teak decks. Built in New Zealand in 1978 by Kumeu engineering & P. Vos (Interior) - she is a one off, custom built ocean cruiser designed by mr. Don Brooke from Auckland NZ.
All keel compartments got cleaned and serviced in 1999 and the old ballast got replaced by 10 tons of new lead.

Monsoon is ketch rigged,click for more info and her mainsail and mizzen sail have the famous NZ Leisure furler. The two head sails are all on Reckmann furlers.
Monsoon can be sailed by one couple, and if necessary by one person alone. Present cap does sail the boat alone every now and than. Major help comes from the SIMRAD AP50 autopilot.

Single Detroit Diesel 6-71,click for info 185HP/Alison gearbox with reduction 3:1. This solid mechanical installation has a Danish Hundested variable pitch 3 bladed bronze propeller with 3 ft diameter, a propsystem which is considered to be simply the best. Monsoon, when cruising at 8 knts/1600 rpm, she'll be consuming 5 gallons of diesel fuel per hour. Monsoon carries 1800 gallons fuel in 2 tanks. So the range under power alone is 2800 n.m. Hundested completely rebuilt in 2005 !!! Engine got new piston rings and injectors in dec 2009.

The alloy deckhouse galley/salon raises 4 ft above deck offers seating for 8 persons around the dinner table and gives a perfect panoramic view over the sea. All cabins, companionways, salon galley and pilothouse have a headroom of 6'and 6". The delightful semi-enclosed alloy pilothouse standing on deck level, offers seating around a big table for 8 persons with shadow, fresh air, permanent view over all ship system controls and protection against the sea. Aft deck half round / full width stern seating fits as well 8 persons. Lots of sunbathing spaces all around, enormous teak decking.
5 spacious cabins for 10-12 passengers/crew will give the travelers/sailors the feeling of being at home on board of Monsoon. (two head/showers). Aft there is Air Conditioning and also plenty of natural ventilation. During a day cruise Monsoon could give 20-25 persons pleasure and enjoyment with her good sail performance and spacious accommodations.
Tankage: 200 gall drinking water \ 300 gallons black water. 15 gallon/hour Water maker.
